Educate Yourself on the Issue

ace-based mascots carry connotations dripping with contempt, racism, and subtle aggressions which perpetuate white-supremacy and bring violence to people of color; this perpetuates the cultural genocide of indigenous peoples that arises from the historical real genocide against Native Americans—for example, the term "R*dsk*n" from the The Winona Daily Republican in Minnesota: “The State reward for dead Indians has been increased to $200 for every red-skin sent to Purgatory. This sum is more than the dead bodies of all the Indians east of the Red River are worth.”

How are mascot terms defined today?

Multiple dictionaries today define the terms as "contemptuous," "racist," "demeaning," "derogatory," and "offensive." In fact, Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary has defined the term "R*dsk*n" as "often contemptuous," since 1898!

Don't Mascots honor Native Americans?

While people may claim that race-based mascots are used to honor Native Americans and "not forget them," these terms dishonor many Native peoples and continue a legacy of cultural genocide, and can lead to a profound negative effect on Native youth.

What are the effects on Native youth?

Academic studies continue to show that race-based mascots and names do not honor Native Americans; to the contrary, these terms lead to “lower self-esteem, lower community worth, less capacity to generate achievement-related possible selves, and greater levels of negative effect” amongst Native American youth, perpetuating a cycle of poverty and oppression. These terms, often contemptuous in nature, further build a gap between native and non-native cultures, contributing to intergenerational trauma and continued racism. Leaders, historians, psychologists, and social scientists have concluded that “Native mascots are part of a much larger web of phenomena that contribute to oppression faced by Native Americans and thus it seems clear that these mascots should be eliminated.” While it should be clear, some people seem to be unwilling to see the continued consequences.

Who are the empowered perpetrators?

Every time teams and organizations take the field or brand their merchandise, race-based mascots conjure images of brutality. National sports leagues, youth sports league governing bodies, the media, corporations, and sponsors must discontinue profiting off of racist tropes. Native Americans are not mascots, they are people and are still here. Words have power. Symbols have power. It is time the media and sponsors cease their complicity in cultural genocide, and stand with justice—boycotting race-based mascots until the names change.

What can I do?

We encourage you to use our database below to search for schools and teams with Native race-based mascots, names, and imagery; encourage these schools to change the name and mascot through our provided pre-drafted emails, tweets, and letters. We must all apply pressure to end this cultural genocide.

We encourage you to use the functionality of this database to email, tweet, and send letters to these schools. The email function will provide a pre-generated email. The tweet function will generate a pre-written tweet, and the letter function will provide you with a pre-written letter for you to mail. We have also provided the school's addresses and social media accounts for you to demand justice and action!
